The Problem
Investing is one of the primary ways long-term wealth is built, yet most students never learn how financial markets actually work. While many financial education programs focus on budgeting or basic personal finance, investing concepts such as diversification, risk, and compounding are rarely introduced early.
Research from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation highlights several major gaps in investing knowledge.
1) Investing Knowledge Gap Investors answered only 5.3 out of 11 basic investing questions correctly on average, meaning many understand less than half of the core concepts behind investing. More than half of respondents could not correctly answer questions about margin trading or short selling, two commonly discussed investment strategies. Notably, 75% of investors who reported trading on margin could not correctly explain how margin works.
2) Social Media Influence Younger investors increasingly rely on social media for investing information. 29% of investors report using social media as a source of investing information. 61% of investors under 35 report using YouTube for investment education. 26% of investors say they use advice from social media influencers (“finfluencers”) when making investment decisions.
3) Risk-taking Behavior Despite limited investing knowledge, younger investors are more likely to engage in higher-risk strategies. 43% of investors under 35 report trading options, compared with just 10% of investors over 55. 22% of investors under 35 report trading on margin, compared with only 4% of investors over 55. These trends highlight the growing need for clear, accessible investing education at an earlier age.
Our Approach
Blue Chip Kids introduces students to investing concepts earlier through clear, engaging, and age-appropriate education.
We focus on teaching foundational ideas such as ownership, diversification, compounding, and long-term thinking through illustrated worksheets, classroom workshops, and conversations with professional investors.
By combining simple explanations with real insights from industry professionals, we aim to make investing understandable and accessible for students who might otherwise never encounter these ideas in school.
Our Goal
Our goal is to help students develop a basic understanding of how investing works before they reach adulthood.
By introducing these concepts early, we hope to give the next generation the tools to think critically about financial decisions, participate confidently in financial markets, and build a stronger foundation for long-term financial security.
